Sticks And Stones By Gloria Nayl: Poem Analysis

I am positive almost everyone has heard of the nursery rhyme “Sticks and Stones” the rhyme states that words should not affect you but I am sure we all can words do hurt. Personally Words do not have an effect on me as much as others. Growing up, my mother told me that the only words that mattered were the ones that I believed to be true and I believe that wholeheartedly. I have been called things like Mutt, Bastard, and have even referred as “You People” but I chose to not let those words bother me for the fact that I know they do not define me. Those words may not be my kryptonite, but if someone is to call me a Cotton Picker today I would be furious an outraged. There was an incident where I was a witness to someone being called a Cotton …show more content…
It just so happened that the only word he knew how to describe what he had thought of me was Mutt. I know his intentions were not malicious he was just an upfront person I guess. That is the way I took it, but who knows how someone who was not capable of understanding his true motive would react. Gloria Naylor believes “Words themselves are innocuous, it is the consensus that gives them true power” (337). She believes the meaning of a word is not what is in the dictionary it is the context in which it is used and what someone response to the word is. I genuinely agree with Naylor in every single way in this situation the phrase it’s not what you say it’s how you say it comes to mind. Did I find his choice of words to be a little unexpected of course, but the way he said it is what reassured me that he was not trying to be mean or catty. There has been situations where a word could be received as negative or positive depending on the person saying …show more content…
Bastard definition is a person born of parents not married to each other. My family members would say it when they were trying to be funny or annoyed. For instants my mom would yell at my sisters and I go to sleep and she would say “Lay down you little Bastards!” Whenever my mom said it, it was not hurtful it was a sign of her growing intolerance of my sisters and I. On the other hand, when a girl from my school called me a Bastard, she was teasing me for being a Bastard, Yes I was upset at first, but I came to a conclusion that yes I am full aware that I am indeed a bastard and I am glade that she is now aware of that. Thus boosting my awareness of the use of irony and sarcasm. In all seriousness the fact that I know what I might be defined as does not necessarily mean that it defines me as a person changes the entire scenario. For example, I could have been fully affected by what she said and could have retaliated multiple ways like an argument or worse in a physical fight. Naylor stated “And building from the meanings of what we hear, we order reality” (337). Therefore reinforces her thought that words are not their definitions it is the context in which we use them. I associated my mom’s use of the word with aggravation and annoyance and the girls with and spitefulness. The word has the same meaning but you have to take into count how they are being used. There are also just some words that will be portrayed as

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

Duffy clearly portrays a sinister and lonely persona in both poems. In “Stealing” the persona is presented as lonely and isolated from society so they resort to stealing just for the pleasure of doing it. Similarly, in “Education for leisure”, an egotistical young adult is portrayed who is killing living things to undo his intense isolation. These poems were written by Duffy to show the terrible situation the UK faced in the 1980s.…
