Being one of the only Mexican American girls at a school filled with extremely wealthy students made me feel uncomfortable. However, instead of confining myself from the community, I looked back upon my family's advice and in a small matter of time, I felt more comfortable living in this neighborhood. I proved to those who doubted me that their assumptions were incorrect; a low income Mexican American girl CAN persevere such obstacles and attain high achievements at an expensive boarding school. Because of these experiences, I think it’s extremely important to spread awareness on education to other individuals. My favorite quote from my grandfather is, “No olvides de dónde vienes” meaning, don’t forget where you come from, and I certainly argue that there is a huge importance in giving back to your community. Personally, not only do I want to continue doing that by spreading awareness on the importance of education in the same way that my family did with me, but I also want to go into educational law to help improve policies that reflect public school education based on my past
