During the early middle ages women were viewed as more of an object than as an equal to men. A few things that women were oppressed in were marriage, political and social standings, religious activities and economic conditions. In later middle ages some women were able to be divorced but only under certain (often religious) factors and would most likely had to give up something to live freely from a marriage. The social position of women had changed greatly from the way it was in the 5th and 6th century compared to the 12th century.
In Britain the 5th and 6th century was referred to as the Anglo-Saxon times.
