Prior to this fairy tale modification, Elsewhere was already a much different place with other changes to different fairy tales. Snow White’s tale is changed for the better. I find myself rooting for the dwarfs and not for Snow White. Snow White has become the evil queen in essence and the dwarfs are her slaves. Violence adds to this tale thereby completely obliterating my preconceived idea as to what the dwarfs’ relationship would be to Snow White. Initially, when I knew this class would be based upon fairy tales I was disappointed. When you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all. Beautiful princess, handsome prince, somewhere along the line someone evil gets killed, the prince and princess marry blah blah blah and happily ever after. The Book of Lost Things turns all of these stories on their heads, leading to a much more interesting and adult read. I found myself interested in reading more fairy tales, particularly Grimm’s. Their violence mimics Connolly’s version of fairy tales which I find to be shocking, humorous, or sometimes both. Either way, these changes make it more interesting for adults to read. Not being able to predict what will happen and how it will happen, takes the fairy tale from dull to very engaging. Distorting the original version, even though violence is keeps the story unpredictable, making for very entertaining
