The protagonists of the two poems seem to have very different approaches in dealing with men that they encounter in their lives. The spinster, although she is very alluring to men, chooses to live her life in solitude. She does everything in her power to barricade herself so strongly, that even the most persistent of men would have no choice but to give up in their pursuit of her. The main characters of both poems feel much more content and safe in isolation from men, than with a lover. The Spinster, early in life, realizes she doesn’t want to live the life that is laid out before her, but instead chooses to live a life where she is in autonomous control of her herself. She lives her life shutting out anyone that could potentially break her barricade. Although she does seem somewhat unhappy with the life that she chooses, she believes that it is better than the alternative. The Siren also chooses to live a life devoid of men. Although she needs them to survive she doesn’t ever stop her routine to actually get to know any of the ones she encounters. The only reason the siren sings about how she wants to be rescued, is to catch the attention of passerby men. She doesn’t take any time to actually get to know any of the men before she routinely chooses to devour
