Siddhartha was a famous novel written by Herman Hesse and it was originally published in 1922. The novel talked about the journey and the quests of a wealthy Brahman’s son, Siddhartha. Siddhartha himself had an intention to reach the state when he does not feel any emotions. Siddhartha does not want to feel desire, love, hatred, anger, or even happiness. During his journey, he had many teachers that guided him towards his emotionless goal. One of his teachers, Kamala, was not only his instructor, but also a figure of love and attachment of the ordinary world for Siddhartha. Siddhartha was based off of the religion of Hinduism. Hinduism originated and is popular in the India. The setting, characters, and some of the religious subjects within the story were based off contents from India or the Hindu religion. From the texts of the Upanishads to some settings in the storyline, such as the Jetavana, where the Buddha made his teachings, were real life places and objects in India. She had affluence and a high hierarchy status in the society. It was hard to imagine that something horrible was going to happen to this beautiful and proud woman. Although Kamla lived a premier life, her death was a tragic disaster to Kamala, Siddhartha, and their young son. The incident started with Kamala and her son were going on a journey to meet the dying Buddha for the last time. They came to the river where Siddhartha was and decided to take a rest along the river and as tragic struck. The novel describe the scene: “....Suddenly, however, she uttered a cry of pain. The boy, startled, looked at her and saw her face white with horror. From under her clothes a small black snake, which had bitten Kamala, crawled away.”
