Literature Review What is marijuana? It is a, “dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa,” (“Marijuana”, 2016). Nothing that is good or your body and in Colorado alone, marijuana related hospital visits increased by a 154 percent from 2006 to 2014 (“Unpacking pot”, 2016). The fact is that drugs, not just marijuana, are a big part of not just Americans lives, but everyone around the world. It is getting out of control for the government and police departments to contain. Stricter laws and more patrol needs to be out on the streets trying to stop this! Also, not legalizing drugs would help this problem.
Drug Trafficking is, “Drug trafficking is an issue worldwide and defined as the “global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, and sale of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws” by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC),” (“Drug Trafficking”, 2016). This is a major issue in the United States and mostly comes from the Mexican border. “Illegal drug abuse costs American society $181 billion a year in health care costs, lost workplace productivity, law enforcement, and legal costs,” (“Drug Trafficking”, 2016). Just imagine how much money we could save and put towards things that are important. Such as, welfare for veterans, charity for the sick and homeless, or tax money so low class people do not have to.
