Culture continues to influence and affect sex and sexual functioning through customary values of honor as practiced in Turkey. Honor in a family is depicted by the sexual behavior and body image of a woman. The women have to uphold themselves so that they do not disrespect their family. Women are trained from childhood through puberty adulthood and old age how to act and be so that they do not bring shame to their family. According to a journal article by Gültekin 2011, strong mechanisms of control are maintained in a woman to ensure she occupies a secondary position in society. She is considered the weakest point of the tribal society hence become victims of violence when the expectations of the community are not met (Gültekin, 2011). Some ethnic groups do not allow explicit sexual contact for women before marriage, as well as many other interactions and relationships with men. A woman’s virginity is her family’s most significant asset which is protected by serious taboos and rules. The men in these communities are not restricted from having explicit sexual contact and experiences before marriage. Powers over females in these cultures affect sex and sexual functioning. Honor killings can affect how a woman performs sexually even during marriage. The suppression could lead to sex desire disorders, arousal disorders and other dysfunctions because of anxiety, fear and pressure from the society.
