Sepsis is one of the world's leading healthcare problems, which is more prevalent than
cardiac arrest. The condition strikes approximately 30 million people worldwide annually. The
majority of the victims either end up dying or suffering permeant health problems. The condition is
still on record for claiming more lives compared to other deadly illnesses such as cancer, especially
in less developed economies (Jawad, Luksic, & Rafnsson, 2012). The most shocking fact is that
less than half of the population has knowledge about sepsis.
Lack of knowledge is the contributing factor in this widespread problem. Apart from the
lack of knowledge concerning the disease, the prevalence …show more content…
Principle People Involved and How They are Affected
The principle people involved are patients, both adults and infants. Sepsis affects mostly
older adults, very young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems. It is an equal-
opportunity killer disease which kills people across all ages and health levels. Many individuals
who survive sepsis recover completely and continue to live their lives normally. However, patients
who suffer from sepsis may be affected in various ways. One of the effects is death. In the United
States, it is estimated that 258,000 individuals die from sepsis annually. This figure means that one
person dies from the disease every two minutes. Patients who survive from sepsis are at a very high
risk of dying in the subsequent months and years (Mayer, Yende, & Angus, 2013).

The survivors may have impaired neurocognitive or physical functioning, low quality of
life, and mood disorders. Additionally, sepsis weakens the individual's immune system increasing
their vulnerability to future illnesses. In relation to financial perspectives, sepsis leads to …show more content…
Some
policies are implemented in a few weeks and others have taken months to years. A policy change
such as what is being suggested with sepsis may take two or more years. Further slowing a policy
change is that the overall structure and culture of the organization is not conducive to change.
Conclusion
Sepsis is a severe condition that affects tens of millions of people annually around the
globe. It affects people from various divides and ages. The increase in the mortality rate among the
victims of the disease has been related to the lack of knowledge among people about the disease
and use of inefficient techniques in identification of the signs, symptoms and intervention

measures. Even after recuperation, sepsis survivors are still likely to suffer from other diseases due
to weakened immune systems. The sepsis bundle is a good place to start, but by not trying to drive
down lactic acid levels by administering oxygen and allowing the body to use the lactic acid it is
producing for fuel during a sepsis crisis patients may have better responses and outcomes to
