My entire photo essay closely resembles Scadia in many ways. It candidly captures a group of people in action and comments on the culture of a group. It interjects interview responses, but has very little interviewer input, just like Scadia. Unlike Scadia, I do sometimes use captions to guide the viewer, have more focused viewpoints in the photographs, and strategically choose which photographs to include and the order in which to put them. On page 92 of Righteous Dopefiend, there is a photograph of part of the community. They are close together and smiling, like in my thirteenth photograph of Pantheon walking and talking, or the twenty-second photograph of Pantheon conversing. The Righteous Dopefiend photograph compares to some of the other photographs of Dakota and the Pantheon group. Just like the addicts in the book, the Pagans in my photo essay stick together. The pictures in both my photo essay and in Chapter 3 of Righteous Dopefiend clearly illustrate unity and community. They show how both groups are comfortable around each other by being in close proximity, smiling, and working together. On page ii, Hank raises the American flag, an important cultural symbol for him. In a similar way, Dakota wears his hag-stone necklace and uses a purple ribbon on the Pantheon logo, symbolizing pride and devotion. Migrant Mother compares to some of my photographs as well. My photographs are candid like Migrant Mother. They also reveal facts about the subject through clothing and pose. In my first photograph, Dakota wears clothing that reveals he is American and—at the very least—working class because of the clothing’s cleanliness and quality.
