In the technologically advanced society we live in today, it can be difficult for many humans to engage in social interaction similar to when the world was without iPhones, computers, FaceTime, and texting. Because so many humans today often become stuck living and interacting behind the screen, it becomes easy for a person to lose him or herself. There seems to be a struggle with balance between social screen time and real time relationships, a stability that should be sought for the sake of our society’s future communications. Thompson describes this dynamic in his article “Brave New World of Digital Intimacy” by stating, “Robert Dunbar argued that each human has a hard-wired upper limit on the number of people he or she can personally know at one time.” The average Dunbar number of a human individual is 150 people according to Thompson’s statements. When people constantly connect online nowadays, they are putting additional stress on his or her Dunbar number. It can be difficult for humans to create and maintain interpersonal relationships when things like Facebook and texting exist. Why would someone want to meet with friends in person when they have the ability to connect with people at their fingertips? The more humans engage themselves in social media and personal technology, the more they hide behind their screens in order to interact with others. Humans, specifically of the younger generations, are degenerating their Dunbar numbers with online connections. These electronic relationships will never have the same effects or meaning of a real life relationship. The shift between the screen life and real life is all too easy for younger generations. This loss of self behind the screen can be compared to Twain’s excerpt when Adam and Eve drift away from each other from time to time. At one point of the reading Adam states, “After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the Garden with her than inside it without her” (Twain 58). This quote allows readers to see how much Eve and her presence means to Adam. Although the two humans often wandered from each other and lost themselves along the way, similar to the factors of today’s social media flow, they discovered in the end that they needed each other all of the time.
