In the concept of abandonment, man enters this world alone and must face life’s trials and tribulations with no outside help. Man is forced to think for himself and make his own choices based off of his own views. Sartre also says during this period of abandonment, “you are free” and “no general code of ethics can tell you what you ought to do; there are no signs in this world” in regards to troubles of decision making (33). There are no signs or outside help because we are still going to make the decision we want to make. People can seek out help from others and ask for advice, but we are still going to choose by taking our own thoughts and views into consideration. Despair is described as the way you portray yourself. If someone were to consider themselves less than another, they have the power to change themselves. Man is what he creates himself out to be and he can always fix what he feels is wrong about his life. Anguish, as described by Sartre, is never truly faced and most try to run away from it.
