In the passage it is shocking to the guard that he is not acting like a victim, and this affects how the guard treats him. The guard isn’t able to treat him as one. The prisoner is acting abnormal, unlike the normal prisoners. He didn’t complain or ask for further treatment after the surgery. The doctor knew all along that he was a prisoner that only had interest in worker rather than having interest in getting well. There is irony here. At the end of the passage the doctor gave the patient the treatment that was need and he also was generous enough to give him the ability to receive further treatment that would be needed in the future. The author of this passage, Bettelheim, proves to the readers that you must behave in ways that make people believe that you are not a victim, even if deep down inside you really are.
