It is their ability to consider what kind of target they will get and what method they use to catch the target. It’s not appropriate for the hunters to use a shotgun to catch a sparrow or to use a slingshot to catch a bear. The weapons the hunters use depend on what they want to catch. This concept can be also applied to rhetoric. If the speaker wants to effectively persuade university students to make them believe that listening to music while they are studying improves their grades, the speaker should use scientific evidences why the music can boost their grades and collective data from the actual experiments showing the statement is true, rather than explain without evidences and make an example of someone who has good grades and always listens to the music. The method used for university students will be different if the audiences are elementary students. They don’t need a vast amount of reasons and evidences, but they need clearance and easiness to understand the concept. Showing them a short video, in which a little kid listens to the music while doing the math homework, and the next day he gets the perfect score on the test, can be very effective. Hence, in order for effective persuasion, the speaker should focus on who the audiences are, and then find the best way to express the topic.
