A researcher scientist named Bernard Gesch at Oxford University, conducted the experiment using 231 volunteers at a British prison. Gesch wanted to find if in fact nutrition helps with violence because that is his belief. Gesch gave half of the inmates a placebo, and half of the inmates an Omega-3 pill. Gesch 's research found that those who took the Omega-3 pill did, in fact, have an effect on their antisocial behavior. "Over time, the antisocial behavior (as measured by assaults and other violations) of the inmates who had been given the supplements dropped by more than a third about their previous records." (Mihm, 2006, p. #1) The inmates previously had bad antisocial behavior, and with Gesch 's research he saw quite a difference in the inmate 's behavior, and the only way this was possible was due to the Omega-3. Prisoners experience a lot of empiricism in prison. There is a comparison used in the first paragraph of the article. Two ideas are compared, one idea is the inmate 's cuisine, and one idea is the inmate 's behavior. They are compared as being very poor and very violent. There is a contrast between those individuals who took the Omega-3 pill, the individuals who had the placebo. The results showed little to no change with the inmates who took the placebo pill, and the inmates who took the Omega-3 had drastic changes in behavior. Gesch published his …show more content…
Omega-3 not only would be a good method for violent prison inmates, but also it could be a method for those with a history substance abuse. A double-blind trial was conducted, and omega-3 were given to those individuals. They had a huge result with a decrease in anger problems. In a double-blind trial, when omega-3 fatty acids were given to people with a history of substance abuse, the symptoms of "anger" fell by 50 percent. (NCPA, 2006, P, #1) The prison inmates and the substance abusers were used in a comparison with one another. The abuser 's anger dropped by fifty percent, and the inmate 's violent behavior dropped by one-third. Ig they had such a great effect on these individuals, the question of what Omega-3 does for the average person is brought up. A new study suggests that omega-3, a fatty acid commonly found in fish oil, may have long-term neurodevelopmental effects that ultimately reduce antisocial and aggressive behavior in children. (Wood, 2015, p. #1) Adrian Raine was the individual who was partaking in the research. He joined other researchers to conduct this study. The researchers conducted the study in the Islands of Mauritius. The study began using three-year-olds, and tracking the behavioral patterns while growing up. The program used was called the enrichment program. They based the results on children who were in the program, and
