REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter contains a compilation of local and foreign literatures and studies about the topic researched and are provided as a guide for the hypothesis of this research and served as a basis for the methodology of the study. These provided studies were also used to support the study and compare the difference of the present.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (2013), diabetes is one of the most challenging health problems of the 21st century. Additionally, there are numerous health problems and issues associated with diabetes, which ultimately reduces the quality of life. Another tragic factor associated with diabetes is that most people are unable to afford proper treatment because it is a costly illness, particularly because it is long term.
The overall objective of type 2 diabetes’s management is to achieve and maintain blood glucose control and reduce the risk of long-term complications (Shafiee et.al, 2012). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder wherein the blood glucose levels are high which results in insulin resistance. The number of adults affected by diabetes is expected to increase all over the world each year. The usual medication for the treatment of diabetes mellitus is oral hypoglycemic drugs which usually exhibits adverse effects so the research focused on finding newer drugs from natural sources with lesser side effects (Prabu et. al., 2013).
