The supervisory relationship in the consultant role takes a collaborative approach with supervisee (Carnes-Holt, et al., 2014). Supervisor deliberately does not provide answers to supervisees questions when asked, however encourages clinician in training to trust self to find desired outcome (Carnes-Holt, et al., 2014). Supervisors in a consultant role typically work with advanced clinicians versus using a teacher role with a novice counselor (Timm, 2015). Supervisors utilizing the discrimination model of supervision should always be in tune with supervisees ever changing needs to adopt and partake in any role as teacher, counselor, or consultant (Carnes-Holt, et al., 2014). Practicum is a time for application of the attitudes, learning, and skills that the student has acquired in his or her classroom experience.…

In beginning my journey with Capella, I chose the degree path of Clinical Psychology with specializations in Clinical Counseling and Sex Therapy. However, now that I am at the end of my degree path, I have made the decision to drop the Clinical Counseling component of my degree. This will mean that I will not complete my practicum at the Masters level and therefore I will be ineligible for licensing at the state level until I complete my doctoral degree. American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists’ (AASECT) provides detailed information for certification requirements on their website. While deciding not to become licensed at the state level with my Masters takes some options away from me, I would meet still be eligible…
The practicum experience thought me that my counseling approach will vary between students. There are students that are open to communicate their needs and concerns with the counselor. At the same time, there are students that are not willing to communicate with the counselor. Students that are unresponsive in counseling might need to build a trusting relationship with the counselor. Through trust, unresponsive students can finally open up to the counselor.…
How this Awareness will Impact my Ability to Counsel To improve my awareness towards domestic violence, gaining more knowledge on the topic would help me to assist the development of the issue, preventing the actions that have been done against individuals. The fundamental role of a counsellor, in any situation, is to collect information from the victims or respondents and then try to understand their views and attitudes towards the issue proposed. By doing this, it would create an opportunity for the counsellor to produce solutions to help improve the issue. Raising the awareness of domestic violence has made me realise that in order for me to become a competent counsellor in this field, I’d have to interact with the client, prepare follow-up…

Going into this class I didn’t know what to expect. With it being called “Introduction To Counseling” I generally assumed that’s what it would be. From professional ethics, attending behaviors, observation, encouraging, confrontation, and reflecting, I was given the chance to learn these skills that will help me in my professional life. Throughout this course I gained knowledge every week that was built up on top of each other that will give me the skill to perform at a higher professional level when I am faced with difficulties and challenges that come my way.…
