Reflection On Body Positioning

Introduction
“A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of conducting my first subjective interview for my Advanced Injury Management class. During this time I was tested on my interaction with the patient and how information from the consultation was charted. Reflection is important to recapture an experience, evaluate it, and learn from it (Boud, et al.1985). With time to recapture and evaluate my experience, I intend to develop skills that will be required in future professional settings, considering both areas that were done well and areas that need improvement. Through this evaluation, I show how important effective communication is and how client relationships can be strengthened or demolished based on how a professional presents themselves.

Then, I looked at my verbal communication and how it influenced the assessment. Compared to an actual healthcare professional, confidence was not conveyed well, and I did not make my patient feel comfortable consistently through the interview. From a healthcare professional I would expect more feedback or response to be given to the client throughout the duration of the evaluation process. While looking at the video, I noticed that my body position became slouched. I appeared to be more interested in writing what they say as opposed to listening to them. Analyzing video has shown me how my uneasiness and body posture can project onto the client and affect the ease of the interaction. Looking at the paper and providing minimal responses could be why the patient appeared nervous as well (Hills, 2012). One aspect that I did well was using eye contact and facial expressions. These improved the interaction by providing non verbal communication and a way of showing the client I was interested in what they were saying (Patel, 2014). Sentence pauses and open ended questions appeared to facilitate the completeness of the questioning and allowed time for the client to express more details. The interaction became more comfortable as my responses improved and my client began to smile, laugh, and give more information to the questions. In future interviews I would focus on appearing comfortable in the …show more content…
All areas were identified, the information was relevant and evidence was provided to link the information to the history section. From the feedback I received, the biggest area for improvement is in my charting notes since they lacked development. Although converted into point form, all the information in the my video was charted into my notes. For this reason, the video did not provide additional information or clarity. My regret during my evaluation was deciding to rewrite my notes. Consequently, I had less time to provide supporting details to the findings and therefore my notes lacked critical thinking and overall development. It is important to chart effectively and show development so that other healthcare professionals can interpret it (Davis, 2012). More detailed chart notes would have shown the connections to my index of suspicion and would have allowed another professional to continue to assess my client from where I

If I could do anything differently, I would have prepped my client to be more prepared for the length of the interview.…

Being a nurse does not mean that you simply take vital signs or give medication to a patient, being a nurse is being a caregiver, an educator, a patient’s advocate and much more. There are many components that a nurse should meet or should be able to accomplish. The Mississippi Nursing Competency Model is a model that allows nurses enhance their education and practice, also facilitates articulation across nursing education programs and allows employers to know what are the different skills performed by the different educational degrees. The competencies include: patient-centered care, professionalism, leadership, systems-based practice, informatics and technology, communication, teamwork and collaboration, safety, quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Because this was my first clinical experience, there were certain competencies that I was not able to either accomplish or I accomplished very little, like leadership or…

Today at Simulation Lab I performed health history on a patient. Firstly, I commenced by preparing myself for the interview. Although I was nervous, as a nurse I had to be confident and prepare myself mentally and kept an open mind to meet the patient. In addition to preparing myself, I prepared the environment, making sure seating and arrangement was in place and the room was comfortable and private. Having done this, I utilized Florence Nightingale’s theory of environmental need.…

The concept of professionalism is a highly contextual construct that varies from individual to individual, influenced by many factors. However, professionalism may be generally defined as a “habitual and judicious use of communication, knowledge, technical skills, clinical reasoning, emotions, values, and reflection in daily practice for the benefit of the individual and community being served.” (Epstein and Hundert, 2002). Professional attributes describes a set of behaviours that encompasses professionalism, such as competence, commitment, confidentiality, autonomy, altruism, integrity and honesty, morality and ethical conduct, and trustworthiness (Cruess, Cruess, and Steinert, 2009). Hence, to exhibit professionalism means to possess professional…

It is important for me to focus, observe and listen actively to both healthcare professionals and patients. For example, when dealing with patients, I should always show respect by listening and not interrupting when they are speaking. Whenever possible, I can also provide a few empathy statements to show that I care about them. An example of an empathy statement that I would give to a claustrophobic patient who is afraid of the enclosed space inside the MRI machine, “ I understand that you are worried about this examination, but do not worry, I will be giving you a blindfold so that you are not aware of the environment.” Therefore, listening actively to a patient helps them to be more open and trusting towards me (Liz,…

Moreover, I made appropriate use of minimal responses by maintaining eye contact without staring, nodding my head to confirm understanding, while using utterances that indicated I was paying close attention. Through this experience, I learned that using attentive body language goes a long way in clients feeling comfortable during the interaction, resulting in a smooth conversation leading to quick rapport building, and contributing to free flowing dialog. Medical professionals debate the best strategies for effective communication, with the knowledge that each doctor must develop their own style of communication. However many organizations have defined key elements of communication skills needed for improved healthcare. These skills include but are not limited to effective listening, effective questioning skills, effective explanatory skills while providing information, counselling and educating patients; and making informed decisions based on patient information and preference. * The use of both patient and doctor centred interview styles are relevant to the healthcare system. This is in no way saying one method is wrong and the other right, however, doctors should have the skill to distinguish when each method should be used.…
