“Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, was focused on the issue of love and its absences and the bearing of love’s absences on marriage and individual identity. His story was involved in very little “action” with in the plot. Instead, the focus was much more on the dialogue and investigation of the theme. The surface of his story looks calm and banal, but if you go deep into it you can see full of emotional tension, hidden memories, wounds, longing, hate, anxiety and melancholy. It is all about inner vision. It throws light into the fact that inner vision is more vital than physical vision. Even if it is true it is not the whole story. The most important moment in this story is at the end that the man who is cynical, closed off emotionally and uncompassionate suddenly makes a connection with another human being. This is a breakthrough for him. Making a Cathedral with the blind man is the moment when Bub learns to connect with another person. He opens himself up and start trusting the blind man which opens a new territory for him. The blind man says to open his eyes but Bub is not opening and he feels he connected to some divine light he never experienced before. I think the name of the story “Cathedral” is also apt to this moment. This is what you feel when you go to any cathedral especially the European Cathedral. There you get a sense of spiritual, inspirational feeling, which gives you a presence of heavenly, divine, high power atmosphere. I think Bub was feeling the same when he closed his eyes and the drawing was also functioning in the similar way. It lifts this man up in a way that never happen to him before. The drug or his marriage never gave him such a feeling and he do not want to lose that feeling. Instead of laying on the couch watching TV every night getting high with drugs while his wife goes to bed by herself, he starts to glimpse a different kind of life.
