Migration has been important influence
Migration has been important influence
The Collins Dictionary defines “immigration” as the act of coming to live permanently in a foreign country. Therefore, it could be said that the first immigrants to Australia were the forbears of the Australian Aborigines who arrived on the continent via the islands of New Guinea and Maritime Southeast Asia an estimated fifty thousand years ago. The late 17th century onwards saw the continent experience its first coastal arrivals after earlier journeys by European explorers. However, Australia’s immigration numbers exploded with the end of World War II, when Australia became home for a number of the dispossessed, predominantly from Europe. Immigrants come with the expectation of starting their lives anew and having opportunities that would…

The Federation of Australia positively impacted immigration laws and restrictions. Before 1901, each colony had different restrictions regarding immigrants, although there wasn’t any action taken to prevent the large numbers. The colony in Queensland had seen the arrival of 60,000 Pacific Island people which hugely affected the Australian’s living there. The number of immigrants entering Australia were spiralling out of control and it became hard for each of the separate colonies to document. In March 1898, Alfred Deakin said that he wanted to speak “to Australians simply as an Australian” which showed Victoria’s support of the idea of restricting the immigration laws.…

The post-war years in California also led to a mass migration of people into the state. As many people were coming to the state the demand for housing increased. As a result, many suburban areas were developed across the state (Textbook, 489). However, not all people who came to California, or who were already living in the state, experienced the same opportunities as others. During the post-war years, African-Americans experienced hostile attitudes from white Californians.…
The reading that resonated most with me was the article about Winnipeg’s Spence neighborhood. This article was about an inner city neighborhood in Winnipeg. A team of people set out to talk to Aboriginal residents of the community about the community development and community association. What they found was that many of the First Nations people residing in the neighborhood did not know about the community association at all. There was a lack of culture and diversity within the neighborhood, making First Nations people feel uncomfortable in their own communities.…

Migration is the component of population change most difficult to measure and estimate reliably hence, the estimation of net migration varies considerably by country. Australia is one of the major net receivers of international migrants (Table 6). Net migration to Australia has been increasing steadily from 1990 to 2010. During 2005-2010, the level of net migration to Australia reached a peak of 10.6 million migrants annually. Australia is a thriving nation continually growing and ageing. According to The Treasury, 2007, the ageing of the population is the direct consequence of sustained low fertility rate whereas, an increased life expectancy at birth. Furthermore, the number of Australians aged 65 and over is projected to more than double by 2055.…
