The Khmer Rouge a communist guerrilla groups led by Pol Pot wanted a new Cambodia free of all western influences, corruption and Lon Nol. After a five years civil war with Lon Nol’s army the Khmer Rouge on April 17 1975 overtook Cambodia capitol Phnom Penh ending the civil war. Many thought it was a change for the better and a time for peace, but the Khmer Rouge had other plans. Soon after Pol Pot started a campaign of purification to rid themselves of any western influence, it all began with a mass exiled of all foreigners. No one was spared all higher level people in the former Lon Nol government were killed including their families. The entire country was forced to dress in the same government issued black pants and shirts. They also close hospitals and denied medicines. Schools and cities were dismantled. Thousands of people were dying a month for execution, starvation disease and overwork. The few that did manage to escape Cambodia told their side of the conflict to newspapers in Thailand. To spin this negative image of the Khmer as being savage killers, they choose their words carefully when Ieng Sary said “you should not believe the refugees who came to Thailand, because these people have committed crimes he urged the refugees in Thailand to return to Cambodia, where they would be welcomed”. (A problem from hell pg 122) At this point it seem like they are playing the hero card and are willing to look the other way for their crimes. This is all proper propaganda to keep other states and countries from snooping around Cambodia border. Pol Pot gave a speech at Phnom Penh reassuring “only the smallest possible number” out of the “1 to 2 percent who opposed the Khmer were eradicated.” (A problem from hell
