Pity, rather than compassion is acted on, enabling Philoctetes to act in a self centered, self pitying way. hamartia, his fatal flaw of his inability to choose for himself and act in his own best interest due to his fear of the unknown. (tragic hero pattern) heracles having to take action due to this flaw, ordering Philoctetes to go to Troy, rather than him going on his own free will. This is what leads to him losing his “happiness” and a main reason the play is indeed a tragedy. and overcoming flaws does not happen,
