Personal Narrative-The City Of Orlando

Decent Essays
As I stepped out into this new world, all I could hear was uproarious sounds of people yelling, the dropping of suitcases, and the rigorous excitement of my heartbeat. I had finally arrived at my new home, the metropolis of central Florida and the home to the world famous Mickey Mouse. The City of Orlando was something truly unique and quite adventurous; well at least in the eyes of a six year old whom had recently arrived from the tropical paradise in the Caribbean.

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

Moving to Orlando from Miami was a huge culture shock to me. Being from the city where people rarely sleep and restaurants/convenience stores are open 24/7 I had a bit of difficulty understanding why the Walgreens around the corner was closing at 12:00 a.m. As I adjusted to what I thought was a drastic change Orlando decided that it wanted to teach me a bit about nature. My time here has pushed me out of my shell and made me a bit more outdoorsy.…

Do you live in the city? How do you feel about the military? It is a bitter-sweet feeling sharing your home with the largest air force base in the United States. Thousands of civilians wake up to do their daily routines such as taking the kids to school, going to work, walking the dog , and not knowing that at any moment we could become a target. Las Vegas is the city that never sleeps and the population just keeps growing, I ask myself if this city is a safe place to live?…

“Miami isn’t too far; it is ninety-five miles away at the most…” Her cherubic features made it hard to fabricate an excuse for wanting to stay in Cuba. I knew that staying here, staying in poverty, predisposed me to a life of misery. The journey would be perilous and I wondered if it was worth it. I wanted to convince her to condone the actions of the corrupt government.…

As one of the biggest cities in the United States, Chicago stretches two hundred and thirty seven miles through the state of Illinois. Chicago has roughly two million people living in one city which is one of the many reasons it is unique. That is more people than the whole state of Iowa. The town of Chicago is one unique city compared to small town Fort Madison with the super structures over towering the city, the cultural differences in the food variety there, and ethnically diverse music are some things I can’t find in Fort Madison. When I think of Chicago the first thing that comes to my mind is; the multiple story, high rise, super structures we call skyscrapers.…

My first time in Miami was December 4, 2009. It was a winter morning, but in Miami there wasn’t a hint of coldness in the air. When we first received the news that we were leaving Cuba everyone was excited and when the day finally arrived it was a little less thrilling and a little more somber. Leaving everything behind and moving to a new country was difficult and leaving a lot of our family was worse. “This is for you and your sister’s future” my parents said when we arrived in Miami I believe they were trying to persuade themselves more than us.…

Every year, around fifty million people visit Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Fifty million people trek across the country to see a giant blue castle that seems to touch the clouds and a human-sized mouse that wears bright red shorts. When I was fourteen, my family and I joined those ranks when we set off on a family vacation down south to the “Sunshine state”. Mine and my little brother’s eyes sparkled with childlike joy as we pulled into the enormous parking lot, and we were fit to burst as we scrambled past our parents to tumble out of the car. That day was one of my favorite memories, and even though it has been fourteen years, I can still remember going on my three favorite rides as if it was yesterday.…

As I walked towards the sidewalk, I passed a group of yoga instructors, an intense beach volleyball match, and a group of young adults partying and doing things that they probably shouldn’t be doing. I pulled up a map of the city with all of the best restaurants and told my family, “Let’s try Bella Monte!” and soon we were on our way to dinner. I walked down the sidewalk of Ocean Drive, entranced by the culture and uniqueness of Miami. I heard “Hello!”…
