“You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.” This quote, made by Jim Rohn, describes a major issue in today’s American society. Many people have come to blame American fast food restaurants for their personal health issues. However, I believe that personal health is the responsibility of the individual. I believe this because nutrition information is readily available, healthy fast food options are becoming more popular, and the fact that people have control over their choices.
My first reason is that nutrition information is readily available. About eighteen states and cities are requiring their restaurants to label their menus with calories. A study found that 57% of adults over the age of eighteen use menu labeling information to make their orders, when it is available, and it helps them select low calorie options (1). A New York City study found that one in six customers used the posted calorie information and bought 106 fewer calories than those who didn’t (1). A similar study from Drexel University found that customers that went to restaurants with menu labeling ordered food with 151 fewer calories than customers at restaurants without labeling on average (1).Most restaurants, even though the information may not be posted, are required to have nutrition information available upon request.
