Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

An art therapist can help a person struggling with this disorder and should connect with the patient and allow them to express themselves in the way in which they choose. The art therapist discovers and presents creative techniques that can increase the understanding and encourage those with generalized anxiety disorder to let go of what is bothering them and teach them ways in which they can become more calm and less anxious in a creative manner. The role of the art therapist is “extremely important because they must have the qualifications to be able to properly administer certain directives and be able to respond appropriately” (Abbey Weeks). This type of therapist, as any type of therapist, has been through a large amount of training in order to successfully facilitate art therapy (Abbey Weeks). Because of the amount of schooling and certifications needed, this should not be considered an easy profession or one that can be easily achieved.…
One foot rooted in urban Puerto Rican heritage and the other having been later immersed in the Southern black experience as an adult, I have learned to merge the conceivably disparate cultures of my family. Each afforded me a unique point of view, developing the self-assurance that has empowered me to succeed in the face of adversity. Being of Puerto Rican descent in the inner city kept the lack of financial stability of my youth in view and motivated me to pursue my education. As a black American female I learned the value of diversity, having experienced first-hand the misconceptions that can shape in a homogeneous environment. For instance from being called “too much of a free-spirited city girl,” in the country to later being “too old-fashioned…
The woman had sessions twice a week where she would work on drawing basic objects, different techniques with drawing, and creating objects with clay. At the end of her rehabilitation it was shown that she had improved “in all areas of cognitive function.” In conclusion, the research indicates that art therapy can be very beneficial to the patient and in some cases it is more useful than other therapies that rely on verbal communication. Art therapy gives another way to communicate the patient’s feelings and thoughts in addition to the…
Introduction Working in a preventative services center with low-income families in a large northeast city is a constant challenge when it comes to providing the best art therapy for the clients. This clinical setting is primarily focused on affording free access to social services for families in need, and thus the funding for art therapy is minimal. This obstacle forces art therapists to be more creative and to think originally when it comes to appropriate therapeutic interventions for the population. The families working with the Center are either referred by the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) because of domestic violence and abuse, or because they have chosen to seek out services for many types problems including…

A true experiment, taking place in a natural setting to determine the causal relationship between two things, has many important factors to account for. The experiment administrator must first consider the independent and dependent variables, pre testing and post testing of subjects, and the split between experimental and control groups. These two groups must be equivalent, and the experimental group must be exposed to the treatment, or the independent variable. My true experiment to test whether art therapy programs for serious violent and chronic juvenile offenders is effective in reducing recidivism of offenders involves a sample size of 100 juvenile offenders, all with similar release dates. Using the probability sampling tactic of…
Armstrong adds that art is “an attempt to construct meaning in the face of relentless pain and suffering” but can also “evoke an anxiety in such a way that the community is forced to confront and control it” (Armstrong, 5). Particularly, Armstrong is…
