This is used to measure “the ability to abstract, conceptualize, follow directions, tell a story, and express emotions and thoughts” (Malchiodi C, 2013). There was a study of a 59 yr old woman who suffered a stroke and was used to test the effectiveness of art therapy in rehabilitation. The woman was hospitalized twice and received many forms of treatment but it was not until her second hospitalization did she start receiving art therapy. Before she started receiving art therapy, she showed signs of impaired speech, weakness in affected side, and limited mobility. The art therapy was meant to “focused on improving spatial perception capability, color recognition, shape recognition, size comparison of objects, induction of expressed internal emotion, and improved socialization” (Kim, Kim, Lee and Chun 2008). The woman had sessions twice a week where she would work on drawing basic objects, different techniques with drawing, and creating objects with clay. At the end of her rehabilitation it was shown that she had improved “in all areas of cognitive function.” In conclusion, the research indicates that art therapy can be very beneficial to the patient and in some cases it is more useful than other therapies that rely on verbal communication. As suggested in the research mentioned, art therapy and creative occupational therapy tasks help to improve a wide range of rehabilitation challenges. Art utilizes a physical aspect which can be beneficial to individuals with physical disabilities. Art therapy allows each person to move at their own pace, reconditioning muscles, while progressively challenging both gross and fine motor coordination. As with other repetitive, physical rehabilitation therapies, art therapy, through biological mechanisms, may help reconnect neuronal pathways in a similar way. Art therapy activities that involve the progressive need for fine motor skills, and exercises that involve planning may be particularly
