The Bible records the piercing of Jesus’ side and being nailed to the cross. (John 19:18,34) The veterans stated that they could never endure that amount of suffering for anyone. One of the season veterans asked a general question. Is there anyone you love so dearly to lay down your life for them? The answer was given with a unanimous response from the rest of the veterans which was no. The Project Director compared Jesus’ mission to the veteran’s mission in remaining steadfast, committed, and faithful. God gave Jesus an assignment, and it was fulfilled when Jesus became a scapegoat on the cross through the shedding of innocent blood. The rationale for the statement was interpreted as Jesus being sinless. Also, through the shedding of Jesus’ blood, the price of sin was paid for humankind which allows room for forgiveness from God. Jesus’ died on the cross, and Jesus commanded the spirit back to God willingly. The session continued with Jesus suffering. The Bible records that Paul had a thorn in the flesh. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10) There was a probability that Pauls’ thorn was related to an unsteady gait caused by the fall from the bright light in Acts 9 as well as aging. However, the Lord informs Paul that grace was sufficient for any physical impairment. The project participants stated that Paul was a murderer and God was punishing Paul for breaking the commandment, thou shall not kill. The Project Director elaborated on Paul asking God for forgiveness because Paul was blameless under the Mosaic Law for persecution and not a murder as recorded in, Philippians 3.6. The session continued with the military core values. Paul’s personal testimony displayed the military core value of loyalty. The Project Director stated that whatever the task was, Paul stayed the course and was committed because of the atrocities Paul witnessed during the discipleship journey. Paul’s commitment to the assigned task also displayed faithfulness which can be compared to the military core values of commitment and loyalty. The Project Director reiterated to the veterans that the same grace extended to Paul by God is available today. The Project Director stated that the veterans would encounter suffering in the forms
