1. This statement conveys a realistic message of how the world has become controlled by narrow-minded people. Paul refers to intolerant citizens who are oblivious and desensitized to what the final consequences could be. They often desire to achieve what they have set in mind. For instance, small-minded people attain this by using cleverness and convincing phrases. This generalization relates to Paul’s schoolmaster, Kantorek. He can express his thoughts in a sophisticated manner in relation to persuading his students to enlist. By his glares and control, he could influence and manipulate the students’ ideas about war. These young men are quite innocent and are easily persuaded. Overall, this general statement is agreeable since narrow-minded people are capable of manipulating others in which could provoke unhappiness.
2. Joseph Behm, one of Paul’s classmate, is chubby and unappealing. He was reluctant in volunteering for the war when Kantorek insisted. Eventually, Behm, not wanting to be called a

When Paul caught sight of the young recruit, Paul was extremely comforting and understanding. He made sure that the helmet was on the young lad’s head for protection and away from any fragments of the bombs. Paul continuously reassures the young man and explains how it is normal to feel afraid. As well, Paul allowed the young recruit to hide beneath his arm and Paul consoled him. With this, the young man was relieved. The gestures that Paul displayed shows that he is a compassionate young fellow. Later, after the shelling, Paul meets the same recruit who is now wounded around his hip. The young lad’s body was covered in blood and is at the brim of dying. Kat and Paul was certain that he will not make it and they decide to kill him by a gun. Though ready to shoot, they were stopped as there were soldiers with a stretcher ready to take him. The agreement of Paul was a more preferred choice of allowing the recruit to die rather than to suffer from the agony of
