Society basically shapes itself. An overpowered government is unneeded when society is self sufficient. Self-sufficiency is when one can prosper by themselves, hence alone, without an overbearing government. It is beyond the bounds of pride, or not wanting what is needed, being independent in its own way is beneficial, who needs a government for everything. The government primarily is needed for governing, not overruling, and overbearing its people. Ralph Waldo Emerson believes that self-reliance is a necessity, getting to where one needs to be is done by oneself, not by the help of others (the government) . Relating to John F Kennedy, Emerson questions what can one do for the government to benefit it, though Emerson is asking what can one do to benefit themselves, that will influence society, that will then shape the government's influence. All that is needed is the balance of society, society basically influences themselves, in which it is marvelous. A philosopher such as Socrates would strongly disagree with the belief in self-sufficiency with a weak government influence. It was believed that government is prosperous when one does what is asked of him/her whether it is believed to be just. Socrates is simply saying the government is never wrong, citizens should depend simply upon a ‘just’ government. However, self-sufficiency shapes society, and it creates a stronger government, that's unfortunately is in need of constant fixing
