Many times I have heard someone say, “What can I do to help?” “I am only one person, what can I do alone?” “I can 't change the world.” Yet, people perform heroic deeds every day as part of their job. For example, firefighters and emergency response people, rush into burning buildings to save other people 's lives. Men and women in the military face danger every day to keep civilians safe. However, ordinary people including children, can do extraordinary things. I believe that ordinary people can alter the course of history by doing what is right. This is the case in the book Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It is a fictional story based on facts told to Mrs. Lowry by her Danish friend Annelise Platt, who experienced the long years of German occupation during World War II. The novel recounts how the Johansen family endanger their own lives to help their Jewish friends escape the brutality of the Nazis and their Relocation Program.
