According to the Center of Diseases Control weight that is higher than what is considered as a healthy weight for a given height is described as overweight or obese. Body Mass Index, or BMI, is used as a screening tool for overweight or obesity in children overweight is defined as a BMI at or above the 85th percentile and below the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Such technologies may include computers, video conferencing, personal digital assistants, pedometers with computer interaction, or mobile applications (ODPHP, 2014). For children, recommendation such as the 5-2-1-0 program Children should have the following: 5 – Servings of fruits and vegetables each day. 2– Hours or less of “screen” time per day. 1– Hour of physical activity per day. 0 – Servings of sweetened beverage as this can help with obesity (Treas & Willkinson, 2014). For children weight loss objective is more effective when it involves the child, the parents, and the community in limiting soda and junk food consumption and limiting hours spent watching television and playing video games. Children can be taught to make “best choices” regarding activities and the foods they eat (Treas & Willkinson, 2014). In conclusion, as nurses we can assist our clients to achieve and maintain a healthy weight with the help of public education messages in multiple types of media. These mode of education are needed to generate support for policy changes that contribute to healthy eating and physical activity as well as to provide important information about obesity to the general public, particularly parents, children, and
