Nietzsche God Is Dead Analysis

In the 1882 collection The Gay Science German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche first stated the idea “God is dead!” a point which he later referred back to throughout his body of work. The death of God has become a widely quoted statement and as such has met various interpretations and misinterpretations leading to a wide general debate as to whether Nietzsche was actually correct in proclaiming the death of God. In answering this question, it becomes of fundamental importance that there must be a clear understanding of what the phrase means and how it is to be read before one can fully analyse the truth of the statement. Additionally, once the meaning has been attained, one must also look to Nietzsche’s contemporaries and influences to see how his ideas evolved and what context they sit it. This also regards the importance of historical context as events succeeding the age of enlightenment become crucial in understanding the environment in which the Nietzschian ideas were cultivated. When generally assessing each of these areas of analysis, we can attempt to answer the question as to whether Nietzsche was correct is saying “God is dead”.
