In my opinion, I believe the most meaningful sentence of the Gettysburg Address was the beginning when Lincoln said “Four score and seven years ago, our father brought forth onto this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” I think this sentence from the address is meaningful because he is stating the intellect behind why this country was fabricated. This stands out to me because at this time there was a great deal of racial tension going on between blacks and whites, and for the President of the United States to call a black man his friend during the Civil War, it shows Lincoln’s leadership. The leadership that it shows is that he does not care about the circumstances of the war and the reputation that he will have, he cares about presenting to the people that this is a new time and that blacks are as equal as whites.
In my opinion, the most meaningful sentence from the second inaugural speech was “Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other.” This stands out to me, because Lincoln is proclaiming that, these two side with different perspectives of life are fighting each other, yet they worship the same god and pray that he helps them through their time of hardship.
