The term "Modernism" refers to activities and creations of those who felt the traditional forms were becoming ill-fitted to their tasks and outdated in the new economic, social, and political environment of an emerging fully industrialized world. Modernists often use ideas and methods which are very different from those used in the past. The following essay includes a total of 6 readings which can be summarized into 3 categories: Modernism in European countries, Modernism in Soviet Russia and China, and, Art Deco. Apart from the summary of the readings, the essay also covered the similarities of modern architecture in America influencing the modernism trend around the globe and different purposes of modernism presented in the readings.

The modernism in European countries was introduced in the readings of Frampton and Futagawa, Hitchcock and Kostof. Beginning with the reading by Frampton and Futagawa, it was about the evolution of modernism in main European countries from 1919 to 1939 and the presentation of eight notable buildings selected by the authors for better illustration of the impact of modernism. The authors believed that modern architecture has played a prominent role in the process of societal modernization and it was a combination of modern and traditional building techniques.
