Miracles, signs and wonders are amazing supernatural phenomena. There is no word for a miracle in Scripture; however, it does use “mighty work, signs and wonders”. Miracles are supernatural works not stemmed from external causes. A mighty work aims our focus to the points of the Bible that have supernatural acts of God. The word “wonders” directs our attention to the impression made by miracles. Sign is used frequently for miracles in the Gospel of John. More than likely this use of the word sign is meant to direct our attention to God. In fact, miracles validate the truthfulness of one sent by God. According to Louis Berkhof “it may be assumed that the miracles of Scripture were not performed arbitrarily, but with a definite purpose. They are not mere wonders, exhibitions of power, destined to excite amazement, but have revelational significance.” First, one example of a mighty work is the raising of Lazarus. As readers we see Jesus approach the tomb, then Martha warns Jesus “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days” (John 11:39). Jesus then give thanks to God the Father and Jesus states “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me” (John 11:41-42). Then after that Jesus shouts for Lazarus to come out, Lazarus came out “his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth” (John 11:44).…
