The Brown VS Board of Education was one of the fights for better and equal education for minorities. Beginning with Mendez VS Westminster we have seen parents take a stand and wanting for their children to have a better education for themselves. Brown vs Education was the first movement for students themselves to want and fight for equal education rather than having their parents fight for them. Even though parents and adults did take part of the movement the students were the leaders. The importance for this case was for schools to stop segregation which caused racism and inequalities towards minority children who had to live through non-human school conditions. This case fought for the right of the fourteen amendment and the equal protection …show more content…
Ogbu’s Minority Typology compares Asian americans as Voluntary minorities and Mexican Americans, Afro americans, Native americans as Involuntary minorities and their route that they have once reaching the US. He explains how Asian Americans come by choice meaning that they do not hold as much regret and sentiment to their home lands. While the Rest come by force due to the US involvement in their homelands, or wanting a better life for their family. Voluntary minorities carry a positive attitude towards making it in the US and believe that trying your best will make you succeed. And in order to do that we must dominate the dominant language and culture leaving our own behind. While, the involuntary minorities know that the system is made to oppressed them but they must try to overcome them. And in some circumstances they must act “white” in order to be taken seriously while not forgetting their culture and values. Minority students are to be succeeding in school and in higher education. Even though the numbers seem to be low it is a big jump compared to the success that their immigrant parents who were not given the opportunity to receive a education. Luckily, specific teachers, adults and higher systems have found ways to help students achieve in a system where they are not expected to succeed. Also the way parents and families are thinking of what it means to be successful it opens doors for students who might be stuck between taking care of their family or taking their families jobs as gardeners, construction, or labor workers. Teachers who want their students to have a chance to achieve and going to college they are going against given curriculum and “As they observed teacher-student interactions and participation structures, they found teachers who used language interaction patterns that approximated the students ' home cultural patterns were more successful in improving student academic performance” (Ladson-Billings). Teachers being the main people who are with students for most of the times they have a major impact on the way that students see each other in succeeding in exams, classes and applying to colleges. As I work with minority students many of them have shown that if people who are from their same background or understand what they go through if they see these types of professionals showing an interest in students like them they more likely to take their advice.
