What should the minimum wage be? This is a question that has been posed and answered by both sides of the political spectrum, although at the current moment it is under heated debate as to whether or not minimum wage should be raised, or stay at its current $7.25. The side with the majority however, wants to raise minimum wage. Over 3/4ths of the country wants minimum wage raised to at least $9 an hour. Minimum wage has dropped 10% since 2009, when it was last raised. So although workers may have received a raise in that time, if it was less than 10%, they are actually being paid less than they were in the past. For how high the US is when it comes to most measures of economic development, its low minimum wage comes as a surprise, and is yet another hindrance to our economic growth. Americans are less likely to move up the earnings ladder than those in almost every other developed country. Australia, who has a minimum wage nearly double the US’s also has double the social mobility, which means that a child born into poverty in the US is twice as likely to stay in poverty as a child born in poverty in Australia. With our current minimum wage, a mother with two children could work full time, a 40 hour week, and still live below the poverty line, without even taking costs like childcare and unexpected health care expenses into account.
