Micah M. White had major contributions to the movement’s progression with gaining followers as well shedding light onto income inequality. Micah White developed a consciousness of earlier in his life than most people. For example, White is Bi-racial (Caucasian and African American) (Schwartz, 2015). White has stated that he does not feel like he fit into either category. This shows that he is culturally aware and competent. Having this type of attitude to allow him to understand his cultural as well as other people’s cultures.
Also, White had many one-man campaigns against authority in public school system. By standing up for what he believed in at such a young age, he could identify one of his many strengths, which is being vocal about issues he cares about. For example, in middle school, he refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance (Schwartz, 2015). The movement provided a safe space, where everyone’s voice can be considered and heard through participatory democracy. The Occupy Movement also gave a home and a family to the homeless. In addition, it allowed for people who would not even think about interacting with each other, a common ground to speak on a topic everyone is affected by (Influencer: Occupy Wall Street, 2011).
I believe that was very effective in domestic and international politics. Unfortunately, there was not any systematic change in government in result of the Occupy movement. There was a vast amount of news coverage through television and the Internet within eighty-two countries. The movement was immense and everyone with a television, computer, or smartphone knew about it.
The Occupy movement’s use of participatory democracy allowed followers allowed two-way communication with their organizers (Influencer: Occupy Wall Street, 2011).
