The term Matrifocal is defined as female headed households, it was described as truncated and inadequate family structures in which males avoided their responsibilities as fathers and conjugal partners and in which women, as a result were overburdened and could not single handedly manage adequately to socialize children and ensure economic support form household and family members, Christine Barrow ( 1996:22),
I agree that matrifocal families are blamed for a range of social ills. I will build my points in explaining the theoretical perspective on Functionalism, social stratification, norms the way of life and culture relating to the traditional and emergent role of families in the Caribbean.

The matrifocal family is still dominant in the Caribbean today, the reason for such families is because the traditional values as in the industrialized society is not predominant in today’s society. Females in single headed homes have to work to support their children and seek education to better themselves. With this challenge for women many children are left unattended because of parents working, studying or doing extra activities to support the home.
