Kira, a character in Gathering Blue, is forced to defend two strong instincts that no one else shares: creativity and compassion. I think Kira expresses self-actualization and love/belonging. Initially, she displays self-actualization because no one else shares the creativity and compassion that she does. Kira uses her time and resources to exercise her creativity through weaving. "The stories you tell to the tykes, the pictures you create with words — and with thread! The threading, you do! It is unlike any threading the people have ever seen. Far beyond anything I could do!" In Gathering Blue, Kira puts forth great effort and consistency in her threading. He is a close friend of Kira’s. Matt shows safety and esteem. He shows safety as he cares and loves for his dog, Branch. In Gathering Blue, Branch, is always by Matt’s side and never goes anywhere without him. Branch’s behavior can be compared to that of a younger brother. While on a journey for the perfect gift for Kira, Matt returns with two perfect gifts one of a blue thread and the other was Christopher, Kira’s father. This provides him with a feeling of accomplishment and esteem. Matts presents proved just how much he cared about Kira and how he wanted to make sure that she was happy. This concludes that Matt raises the bar when is comes to safety and
