How is it possible to change into an entirely different person? In the novel We The Living by Ayn Rand, Kira Argounova is the main character and she goes through some drastic changes in her simple life. Kira is in Soviet Russia during Communism and doesn't have much of a high quality life. Kira ends up changing the way she lives, her outlook on life, and her precious future all from one person.
In the beginning of the novel Kira tends to not care for minor things or even notices anything she is mainly just focused on her dreams and and the possibilities of her future. While Kira’s family is on their way to Petrograd, Kira’s sister, Lydia even hints that Kira has always been like this even before the novel even starts by saying “You’re off -

She even goes to court begging them to help which is very unlike Kira who is against the government. Of course they deny her help and then Kira tries prostitution. “ For one night? Why your sisters don't make that in a whole career” (Rand 232). Kira has not only lost care for her health but also her self worth all for Leo. Kira then is reminded that Andrei said he “ makes more than enough money than I can spend” (Rand 222). Kiras last resort is to go to Andrei who has been ignoring her recently because he is in live with her. Kira takes advantage of the situation and uses it to get into a relationship with him. “ I can! I love you” (Rand 239)! From Kira's recent actions she is most likely going to use Andrei to help Leo get back to health. At the end of Part one Kira is saying bye to Leo leaving on a train on his way to Kira's uncle to help out with his sickness. Kira tells Leo “ Leo- your money or my money or anyone's money- does it really matter . . . I want you to live” (Rand 242). Kira is in a way confessing to Leo for what she has done with Andrei in order to help him. While Leo is leaving Kira attempts but fails to jump onto to train while moving to be with fully knowing she could die from all the previous stories she has heard but she does not
