Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Disobedience Civil Rights Activist Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.” Martin Luther King was a man who took leaps of faith to fulfill what he believed to be right; he chose to put his life on the line for equality. Martin Luther King Jr.’s involvement in civil disobedience was due to personal influences, he chose to participate in civil disobedience to protest unfair racial treatment, and he did achieve success using this controversial method of standing up for what he strongly believed to be right. King was born on January 15, 1929, at family home in Atlanta, Georgia (Griffin). He was born with the name Michael, but later had his name changed to Martin (“Martin” Nobel). King was born to Christine King Farris and the Late Reverend Alfred Daniel Williams King (Griffin). Martin Luther King Jr. was a very multitalented man. King’s mother Christine King Farris, taught him and all of his siblings the art of playing the piano (“Musical”). King’s educational career was a very long, extended journey. Martin Luther King Jr. began his education at an elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia called Yonge Street Elementary School. Due to his high academic level, King was able to leave his high school, Booker T. Washington High School, at the age of fifteen. In 1948, he graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A. degree in Sociology. At Boston University in 1951, King began doctoral studies in Systematic Theology; Martin Luther King Jr. also studied at Harvard University (Griffin). He married his wife, Coretta Scott, in 1953. They later had four children together; Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice Albertine were their children (“Birth”).
