grew up, he learned many philosophies that would help him contribute to the Civil Rights Movement. His father, Martin Luther King Sr., preached to Martin Luther King Jr about the teachings of the Bible. According to King’s biography, his father and grandfather were both preachers, and this led to King learning about Jesus and his teachings (Washington 28). Martin Luther King would later earn his Doctorate in Philosophy from Boston University (King 3). In grade school at Young Street Elementary, King first read about Gandhi and his non-violent approach in India (King 1). Gandhi mostly inspired King throughout his entire journey through the Civil Rights Movement. Ghandi taught King the philosophy of nonviolence, and King would use this philosophy in his marches, boycotts, and protests. When King had his 4 children, he said that they would live in a nation where they are not judged by their skin color, but by their character.
