In the text “Death by Landscape ” written by Margaret Atwood, a woman called Lois has experienced a tragic event in her childhood, which caused desolation, and guilt. Lois uses landscape paintings at her home to bring the memories of her friend Lucy, who tragically disappeared in a mysterious way. Lucy disappearance is constantly on Lois mind. As Lois grew older, she feels uneasy being in the wild or looking at it. The fact that they never found her body, makes Lois uneasy as there is a possibility that she is still alive.The mystery of Lois’ disappearance is represented by the vastness of the landscape.

The fact that Lois has trouble remembering having her two boys, getting married or even how her husband looked like, but is able to to perfectly renumber the days at the camp proves, that she never really left the camp,she believes that somewhere in the woods, Lucy is out there keeping an eye on her “She looks at the paintings, she looks into them. Every one of them is a picture of Lucy. You can’t see her exactly, but she’s there, in behind the pink stone island or the one behind that.” (Atwood 348) The more Lois is going to stare at those painting the more she is going to feel uneasy, and that the mystery will never be solved. Lois looked at Lucy as someone should would love to become, wild, free, and happy, being her friend made her life finally exciting, and full of new experience. Not only Lucy died, but she took away with her some part of Lois’s life.
Lois’s life before meeting Lucy was plain and boring, Lucy gave like a spark to it. Lois finally believed her life made sense, and an exciting life like Lucy’s was coming in the future. The death of Lucy turned off the fire of excitement Lois had inside of her. Lois then will never be able to turn on the fire inside once more. Lucy took away with her, the excitement out of Lois. Lois ended up living her life plain and boring as if she never met Lucy.
As a conclusion to the text “Death by Landscape”, isolation became part of Lois’s life soon after Lucy’s death, part of her died with Lucy. Lois surrounded herself with the landscape paintings to feel Lucy’ presence, and keep herself away from the life she is living now, boring and without excitement. Even thought she feels uneasy looking at those paintings, there is something in them that she is trying to find, it is the little spark that gave her a meaning to her life. Lois will never be able to forget the events that happen in the camps, and by the end, she concludes by telling that the spark and Lucy are hidden deep in the wilderness in
