Abstract
Leadership can have several definitions. Researchers can take many different approaches to studying leadership and leadership styles. Indicators can be examined to determine the effectiveness of leaders and potential leaders. It can be argued that leaders are not “born”; they are trained and taught skill sets that develop their leadership style. Leadership approaches are classified into the following five approaches: the trait approach, the behavior approach, the power-influence approach, the situational approach, and the integrative approach. Leadership affects the success of companies and organizations. I believe the behavior approach may be the best approach for the industry in which I was employed.
Research
Leadership may be one of the most frequently studied topics in the organizational sciences (eNotes, 2013). Leadership within an organization can affect critical variables within an organization. For example, employee and customer satisfaction can be enhanced through effective leadership or damaged by bad or ineffective leadership. In my opinion, good leaders must exhibit a degree of commitment in order to be effective. According to the behavioral approach, effective leaders exhibit behaviors that are different than the behaviors of those leaders that are considered ineffective leaders. Two major classes of leader behavior are task-oriented behavior and relationship-oriented behavior (eNotes, 2013).
Behavioral Approach The behavior approach began in the early 1950s after many researchers became discouraged with the trait approach and began to pay closer attention to what managers actually do on the job (Leadership in Organizations, 2010). This research falls into two broad subcategories. One of these subcategories looks at how managers spend their time and the distinctive pattern of responsibilities, activities, and functions for managerial jobs (Leadership in
