In contrast to the teachings of Paul, The Awakening, written by Kate Chopin, takes on another perspective of marriage. The Awakening depicts a story of several couples during the 19th century who have differing views on the subject of marriage. Paul’s teachings are similar and different to the couples in The Awakening because Paul teaches that a woman should submit to her husband while the husband loves her, the rights of both should be kept throughout marriage, and both husband and wife should love each other until death.
Paul often taught that the woman in a marriage should submit to her husband, and she should follow his lead. However, the husband must also love his wife and protect her from the wrongs of others and herself. Edna and Madame Ratignolle have conflicting beliefs about how a marriage should work and Paul’s letter to
