A raisin in the sun was written by Lorraine Hansberry in March 1959 it is about an African American man that tries to attain a better life for himself and his family. They’re a living in poverty, a family of five including Walter and Ruth, who are husband and wife, their son Travis, Walter’s mother Lena, and Walter’s sister Beneatha. The play takes place in Chicago during the 1950’s which was a very moving time era, when the Civil Rights Movement began. So a lot of things were drastically changing for American citizens. Walter and Beneatha’s father who is also Lena’s husband recently died and left behind a settlement insurance claim worth ten-thousand dollars. Walter feels that he is entitled to some of the money as well and hopes to invest the insurance money into a liquor store while Beneatha is very adamant that the money belongs to their mother Lena, and says that she has every say so on what the money is going to be eventually invested in. Lena takes most of the money and put a down payment on a big beautiful house in a white neighborhood and gives the rest to Walter Lee for his sister’s education and to help fulfill his dream of starting his liquor business. Sadly, after passing the money to Bobo, Walter Lee learns that Willie has ran off with his money so now he is left with nothing. During the end of the play, a white man comes to their home and tries to persuade the Younger family to sell their home in the white neighborhood that they recently put the down payment…
