The participants mood state appeared to be a key factor leading to the develop-ment of different and contradictory selves. Participants also had a difficult time identifying be-tween self and the illness, with confusion over who the real self was. At times there were also negative evaluations of self. This to me is not surprising because Bipolar Disorder mostly often entails such a high and a low; therefore, individuals may have an altered view of themselves from going through such drastic mood states. From reading the articles, I would assume that it may also bring some feelings of shame, guilt or embarrassment if the ones close to them are witnessing their shifts and symptoms. This could lead to drastic underreporting of the illness, and lack of individuals seeking help and treatment. I would believe that the earlier the diagnosis the more difficult it would be for an individual to develop a well rounded sense of self.
