Over the past 10 years, I have been in 4 different psychiatric hospitals. My most recent diagnosis is paranoid schizophrenia with chronic depression and anxiety. There are things that I wish I had known during my trips to the hospital. This guidebook is my way of trying to include what I wanted to know during my visits and what I know now. Today, with counseling, prescribed medications, and a daily nutritional program, I am able to maintain my independence and do things that I want to do in life. Some of what I have included here is in the form of art. I am a writer and musician, and my lyrics are one way that I have been able to express myself. Some have caused me to gain 25 or more pounds, to feel emotionally numb, tired, and slower than I normally would be. Other medications have helped brighten my mood, control intense anxiety, and sleep better. Medications are complex, and a trial and error approach may be necessary. It should always be with a medical doctor and not on your own. I have found that appropriate medications along with a personalized nutritional program has been the best for me. Also, I have found benefit with therapy with a psychologist on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I have been lucky to have worked with both a medical doctor and a psychologist who I trust and can relate to. Medications are particularly useful for the quicker management of symptoms. A nutritional program is useful for a slower healing process.
Understand the fundamentals of health maintenance. These include sleep, exercise, nutrition, cleanliness, socializing, planning, and medication management. Participate in activities, meetings, therapy, fitness sessions, visits, and music opportunities.
Memories: I had mixed feelings about my group therapy and other activities. It can be very uncomfortable. Now I know that focusing on my outer activities such as reading, group discussions, and walking outside are equally important as my inner quality of mind. The outer and inner help to balance each
