Limitations is about the choices of Judge George Mason. Mason is a judge at the Court of Appeals in Kindle County, a fictional county based on Cook County, Chicago, Illinois. The main storyline is about an appeals, before Mason, in a gang-rape conviction. During the appeal, Mason recalls his personal involvement in a gang-rape forty-years prior. Interwoven throughout the main storyline is an investigation into #1, an anonymous source threatening Mason, and Patrice Mason’s treatment for cancer. Collectively, Limitations intermingles multiple storylines into a comprehensive narrative. In People v. Warnovits et. al., the gang-rape appeal, Warnovits and his hockey teammates Kellen Cook Murphy, Trevor Witt, and Arden Van Dorn raped Mindy DeBoyer in 1999. The multiple rapes occurred at a Glen Brae High School party at Warnovits’ house. DeBoyer, 15, got drunk and was provided a pill by Warnovits before losing consciousness. Warnovits discovered DeBoyer and invited his teammates to rape DeBoyer, while recorded on videotape. As described in Limitations, “Warnovits captured each assault on videotape, often employing the camera in a grotesque fashion that would startle even a pornographer” (11). The following day, DeBoyer suspected nonconsensual sexual activity occurred, but she did not file a police report.
